6 THINGS You Didn’t Know About Your Sun Block

Bombarded by an array of sunscreens, it’s tricky to figure out which ones are the best and is both safe to use as well as protective against the harmful sun rays! But never fear, we took the time out to sort through the snarls of sunscreens and here we are going to provide you with all the information you need to know about how to best protect you skin from the glaring sun! If you don't get it, you can always scroll back to top and look at this infograph above!

 1. SPF

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it is used to measure out how well a product filters out ultraviolet (UV) light – one of the types of light that damages and burns the skin. The SPF number stands for the amount light the sunblock can filter before the skin starts to burn! I know it’s getting a little bit too informative, but bear with me! The two main ingredients in sunblock are ZINC OXIDE as well as TITANIUM OXIDE, both are known as physical based sun protector.

2. A Broad-spectrum sunscreen?

There are two types of UV light that can cause harm to your skin – UVA and UVB. A broad spectrum, or full-spectrum sunscreen protects you from BOTH! UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkling and age spots. UVB rays can burn your skin and too much exposure to both UVA and UVB rays can cause skin cancer! As scary as that sounds, it is what your skin is being exposed to and the best kind of sunscreen is one that offers protection from UV light.

 3. What does the ‘+’ sign mean?

Have you ever noticed PA +++ rating in the sunscreens along with SPF level? Some people might have just ignored it, while some are confused. Now that you have knowledge about the SPF, but what does PA+++ indicate? PA simply means Protection Grade UVA rays! Protective grade of sunscreen is often levelled as PA+, PA++, and PA+++ with the more plus sign the more protection from UVA rays.

 4. The importance of Vitamin D

The first thing to understand is that the sun is vital for life on earth, and it is the primary way in which humans can make vitamin D – a vitamin essential for strong bones and a healthy immune system, so the sun is actually not that bad! Nothing is more important to us on Earth than the Sun because without light, Earth would be a lifeless ball of ice-coated rock!

 5. Be Sun Smart!

HOLD ON WE ARE ALMOST DONE! There is no need to avoid the sun all the time, but it’s important to be smart about when and how long you expose yourself to the sun. The sun is at its strongest between 10 am and 4 pm, so avoiding the sun or using SPF during these times would be wise if you were going out into the sun for more than 10-15 minutes!

  6. What are your protection options?

You have three options when it comes to sun protection – stay in the shade, cover up, or use a product with SPF! Obviously covering up or staying in the shade are full proof ways to avoid the sun’s rays and can be the best option when the sun is at its strongest!
